Fabric

How to judge fabric and texture from photos

Photos cannot tell you everything, but they can reveal enough to avoid many weak buys. Texture, weight, shine, and drape all change how a piece feels in an outfit.

Fleece and cotton

Look for structure around cuffs, hem, hood, and collar. Very thin fleece can collapse in photos, while heavier cotton usually holds a cleaner shape.

Denim and washed fabric

Check whether the wash looks natural across seams and pockets. Uneven fading can be intentional, but harsh or patchy fading may look worse in person.

Nylon and technical fabric

Nylon jackets and bags can look glossy under warehouse lights. Compare several photos to see whether the shine is fabric finish or lighting.

Knitwear

Inspect ribbing, collar stretch, hem shape, and sleeve volume. Loose or warped knit edges can make a sweater look tired quickly.

Leather-like materials

Watch for plastic shine, uneven grain, and stiff folds. A subtle texture usually looks more wearable than a mirror-like surface.
